What is Cotton?

Cotton is one of the most popular natural fibers used for textiles and clothing. Known for thousands of years, its fibers, either short or long, can be woven or knitted into various fabrics such as lawn, batiste, poplin, jersey or velvet. The most common weaves for cotton include plain, twill and satin. Cotton cloth is easy to handle and comfortable to wear all year round. Soft, breathable and absorbent, it is a go-to choice for summer apparel. Lightweight fabrics are best suitable for shirts, blouses and dresses; medium-weight – for trousers, skirts, dresses; heavy – for trousers, jackets and outwear. White cotton is everybody’s favourite when summer comes around, with a choice of floral prints available for any taste and style. Tiny blossoms, sprawling bouquets or large flowers – there is a bright future for this fashion trend.

Cotton Lawn Fabric

Cotton lawn is a fine cotton cloth in a plain weave. It is lightweight, soft and ultra smooth. Lawn is firmer than batiste, but not as crisp as organdy. It has a high thread count and tends to be slightly sheer, especially in lighter colors. The name of the fabric comes from Laon, a city in France where it was first produced. Cotton lawn can be solid colored or printed. It works best in blouses, dresses, pinafores and tops perfect for spring and summer.

How to Sew with Cotton Lawn

The good thing about cotton lawn is that it is lightweight, but not very slippery. Due to its crisp nature, it looks wonderful when gathered, pleated or shirred and is most suitable for full silhouettes. Straight darts are not a wise choice, try to form gentle shapes instead. There are a couple of tips that can help you turn this fine cloth into a beautiful piece of clothing.

  1. Always prepare your fabric before cutting. Pre-washing might work, but it all depends on the type of fabrics – sometimes only dry-cleaning/steaming is allowed. Use a scrap of fabric to test if pre-washing works for you.
  2. If you need to secure your fabric, opt for fine pins – they are perfect for this smooth fabric. You may also use pattern weights to keep it in place.
  3. Use water soluble and vanishing pencils or chalk to mark the fabric. Avoid any kind of ink as it can easily damage the fabric.
  4. Sharp scissors are a key to success. Make sure you avoid snags when cutting.
  5. Choose the correct machine foot and needle for your sewing machine. Your needle size should be based on the type and weight of thread you are using. We recommend using cotton or polyester threads.
  6. Cotton lawn is a delicate fabric. It prefers medium temperatures and calls for a pressing cloth. Press it with an iron, using steam, to remove any wrinkles. Do not iron wet fabric – it can stretch beyond repair.
  7. Add body to cotton lawn with fusible interfacing. Choose a solid, semi-sheer interfacing and try it on a scrap of fabric to make sure it fits.
