This black wool and silk blend twill features an elaborate pattern of paisley style motifs and swirls. It is applied via screen printing, which means that each color, be it pink, light blue or beige, is transferred onto the ground with the help of a special screen, one by one, until all the inks have been used. This dyeing technology ensures high color retention and vibrant colorways that are resistant to fading. Premium wool provides softness, while silk gives a smooth feel.

What is Wool?

Wool is a natural fiber provided by animals, mostly sheep. Humans have been spinning it into cloths since ancient times because of its unique properties. Sheep’s wool is resilient, highly durable and pulls moisture away from the skin. The application of wool has no bounds: suiting wool for high class business suits, coating wool for warm overcoats and jackets, finest worsted wool for dresses, skirts and tops. Some of the best sheep’s wool comes from Australia and New Zealand.

Beside merino wool that is suitable for all seasons, there are other types of wool used for apparel, such as

  • alpaca,
  • cashmere,
  • vicuna,
  • mohair.

High quality wool tends to be on the expensive side, but it’s worth the price. Apart from the feel and the texture that leave you speechless, these noble wools speak volumes about one’s style and taste.

Wool fabrics are divided into woolen and worsted ones. They often come in blends with silk, cotton, linen that improve performance and wearability.

Paisley prints and patterns are one of the hottest trends that seem to stay forever. Offered in vibrant or muted colors, worn both by women and men, paisley proves one thing: any trend can become classic if it’s versatile and adapts to any style.

Paisley Twill Fabric

Twill is a type of weave with a diagonal rib pattern. Fabrics made with twill weave are durable, attractive and mostly opaque. Compared to plain woven materials, they have better water resistance and wrinkle recovery. They are made of various fibers, such as silk, cotton, wool, viscose, etc.

Twill is a sturdy fabric that lasts for a long time if properly cared for. Depending on the weight and quality, it can be made into:

  • dresses,
  • skirts,
  • tops,
  • blouses,
  • sweatshirts;
  • shawls and wraps;
  • lining, etc.

Paisley twill is a beautiful investment to any wardrobe, as it never falls out of fashion and carries an aura of mystery around it. This Persian droplet motif has evolved into a world-class pattern and is often seen on some of the finest fabrics from Etro and Liberty of London.

How to Sew with Twill

Sewing twill fabric may be a daunting task. 100% silk twill is quite slippery, while wool and cotton twills are more stable. Here are several tips you might find useful when planning to sew this type of material:

  1. Always prepare your twill fabric before cutting. We do not recommend pre-washing because it can lose its properties. The best strategy is to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Dry-cleaning helps seal the pigment.
  2. If you need to secure your fabric, opt for fine and sharp silk pins and use them within the seam allowances to avoid holes. Use weights instead of pins if possible.
  3. Sharp scissors are a key to success. You may also use a rotary cutter.
  4. Do not forget to choose the correct machine foot and needle for your sewing machine. If you are working by hand, use sharp needles and special threads from reliable thread suppliers. We recommend sewing at medium speed to avoid punching.
  5. Press twill with care. Silk fabrics are ok with ironing, but they don’t work well with water as it can leave water spots. Press silk twill on the reverse side with some kind of protection, like cotton batiste. Wool twill can be ironed directly. Always test your cloth before pressing and steaming!
  6. Remember, needle holes are difficult to hide, so you have only one shot with silk twill. However, wool and cotton twill fabrics are not so delicate. Planning your sewing and preparing notions in advance help ease and speed up the process.
