What is Cotton?

Cotton is one of the most popular natural fibers used for textiles and clothing. Known for thousands of years, its fibers, either short or long, can be woven or knitted into various fabrics such as lawn, batiste, poplin, jersey or velvet. The most common weaves for cotton include plain, twill and satin. Cotton cloth is easy to handle and comfortable to wear all year round. Soft, breathable and absorbent, it is a go-to choice for summer apparel. Lightweight fabrics are best suitable for shirts, blouses and dresses; medium-weight – for trousers, skirts, dresses; heavy – for trousers, jackets and outwear.

Cotton Poplin Fabric

Cotton poplin is a plain weave fabric with fine warp and coarse weft. It is tightly woven and has a soft finish. Poplin may also have a subtle rib effect along the warp. This cotton cloth is wrinkle-resistant and durable. A common shirting fabric, it is widely used for women’s dresses, skirts, blouses and tops, for formal and business casual attire. Stretch cotton poplins provide more ease in movement; they are often chosen for ladies’ apparel. Available in a large array of designs and colors, these cotton fabrics are indispensable in any wardrobe. Summery tints include white, pink, yellow, green, turquoise and light blue, while darker hues are perfect for other seasons. Cotton poplin is already a breathable fabric, but it gives even more comfort to the wearer when it has cut-outs, or eyelets.

How to Sew with Cotton Poplin

Knowing your material is essential if you want to sew perfect garments. Poplin pleats well, creating clean lines. It is prone to wrinkling and does not slide around on the table. Learn some tricks that can help you turn this cotton cloth into a beautiful piece of clothing.

  1. Always prepare your fabric before cutting. Pre-washing might work, but it all depends on the type of fabrics – sometimes only dry-cleaning/steaming is allowed.
  2. If you need to secure your fabric, opt for fine pins – they are perfect for this smooth fabric. You may also use pattern weights to keep it in place.
  3. Use water soluble and vanishing pencils to mark the fabric. Avoid any kind of ink as it can easily damage poplin. If you prefer chalk, test it on a small piece of fabric to see if it leaves any oil mark.
  4. Sharp scissors are a key to success. Make sure you avoid snags when cutting.
  5. Choose the correct machine foot and needle for your sewing machine. Your needle size should be based on the type and weight of thread you are using. We recommend using universal needles and all-purpose threads.
  6. Cotton poplin is wrinkle-resistant. It should be ironed on a warm setting, preferably with a pressing cloth. Do not iron wet fabric – it can stretch beyond repair.
  7. If you choose to add interfacing, use either sew-in or fusible one. Poplin is a medium weight fabric and requires similar interfacings. Try it on a scrap of fabric to make sure it fits.

Cotton Poplin Fabric

Cotton poplin fabric is a double-sided cloth known for its durability, flat finish and a smooth feel. Made of purely natural fibres, it is hypoallergic and breathable. Poplin has a plain weave and rigid structure which lends depth and softness to the lustre of the silky surface. This fabric typically comes in solid or patterned designs. The widest selection of colourways and motifs often make poplin the first-choice fabric for dresses, blouses, shirts and pants.

The most luxury cotton poplin fabrics are created by the leading European manufacturers, such as Italian Cotonificio Albini, Luigi Verga, Carnet, Leggiuno and British Liberty.

Embroidered Cotton Fabric

Embroidered cotton fabrics offer the same amount of comfort plus add a playful touch to your style. The end-uses are limitless: from simple shift or shirt dresses to playsuits, tunics and full skirts. One may go for plain cotton materials with tone-on-tone embroidery, perfect for understated looks, or choose bolder versions with contrast-colored threads, frills and appliques. Satin stitch, one of the most beautiful types of embroidery, has the silkiest touch.

Embroidered fabrics are produced by Carnet, the famous Italian manufacturer of high-end silk, cotton, linen and wool fabrics.
