Alpaca is the luxurious and rare fabric made from yarn of Peruvian alpacas. It is mostly used for sewing alpaca coats and sweaters for cold climates and winter conditions. Men’s alpaca fabrics are highly rated for their water-repellent, hypoallergenic and anti-static properties and a softer-than-wool hand feel. They are stronger, lighter, warmer, and more resilient than wool.
Due to alpaca’s inherent insulating factor, even the finest alpaca fabric proves to be extremely warm. Alpaca fibre is sorted into 6 grades: from Ultra Fine (Royal baby) that is 20 microns and less — to Robust that goes from 32.1 to 35 microns.
Alpaca is the fabric of choice when it comes to men’s suits. Durable, long-lasting and 100% natural, it is often blended with other noble fibres, such as wool, cashmere, angora, silk, as well as hi-tech fibres like Tencel. The combination of alpaca and wool that you can find at Tissura is a perfect pick for warm and rain-proof garments.
Alpaca fabric is considered to be the rarest one in the world. South America, primarily Peru, North America (United States and Canada), Australia and New Zealand produce only 4,000 tons of precious alpaca fibre. Compared to 1,851,000 tons of wool produced annually, alpaca is a rare commodity on the market.
We proudly present luxurious alpaca fabrics crafted by distinguished manufacturers: Luigi Colombo (Italy), Dormeuil (France), Incalpaca (Peru). Alpaca fabrics by Jacob Schlaepfer – a famous Swiss experimentalist — are at the intersection of impeccable quality, contemporary art, curious design and new technology.
