Silk Satin Fabric

Silk Satin has been famous in Europe since the Middle Ages. Invented in China in the 12th century, it was named after the Chinese port city of Quanzhou, that sounds like ‘Zayton’ in medieval Arabic. Satin means both – the name of the specific fabric and the method of its creation. Satin weave is one of the three existing weaves. It has a different pattern: four threads over, one thread under- with less interlacing. During the production process yarn is run through hot cylinders to ensure greater sleekness. Satin silk fabric must not be confused with sateen, the fabric made from short-staple yarns such as cotton. Cotton sateen is slippery like satin silk fabric, but has less luster.

What can be made from satin material? The most popular items are:

  • satin baseball jackets;
  • pointe shoes;
  • nightgowns;
  • women’s evening dresses;
  • athletic shorts;
  • women's lingerie;
  • blouses;
  • neckties and scarves;
  • ribbons and decorations;
  • men's boxer shorts and briefs.

White satin is the fabric of choice when it comes to bridal dresses. It is often offset by fabrics like white lace, tulle and matt crepe fabric for the sake of contrast. Printed satin fabric can turn heads made into a statement dress. A bright animal print is always en vogue. Floral print is perpetually in fashion and can be worn in a wide range of settings.
